We were in Fort Wayne, IN recently to install one of our popular garage flooring epoxy finishes – epoxy chip. Many of you have seen epoxy garage floor kits at the big box stores and some of you have purchased and installed those particular products. If you’re wondering what your success rate will be with a “Do-It-Yourself” type kit, just ask anyone that has done it themselves what it looks like after a few short months (your chances at winning the lottery might be better than actually having a long term successful installation of one of these products).
Our customer for this project had already done his research and didn’t want to mess around and waste his time and money with a high failure rate product – he knew he didn’t have the proper equipment to prepare his garage floor & he knew he wanted a durable high-strength industrial product.
After shot-blasting the garage surface to allow the epoxy the soak deep within the capillaries, we used a flexible epoxy joint filler to completely fill the expansion joints to allow for an easy to clean and seamless floor. Then we applied an moisture barrier epoxy as a prime coat (our customer told us about excessive floor sweating in humid days so we address this problem right at the beginning). A blend of white, black and gray 1/8″ chips (our “Domino” blend) were applied to a base coat of industrial gray epoxy.
After being top-coated with a couple layers of urethane for scratch resistance, the makeover was complete (& our customer said the finished was more than he expected)!
